![]() ![]() The beach is nice with lots to do especially with the family. She shared her passion of helping the museum digitize its history. She was very knowledgeable and enjoyable to talk with. There was a college student working there the day we visited (HIstory major). There is a cute little museum dedicated to the CCC and it's history within Iowa, very informative. The buildings located within the park are gorgeous structures made from timber and limestone by the CCC back in the 1930's. We took a walk down the stream following the little fish, saw a woodchuck out for an afternoon swim and many beautiful birds also enjoying the day. ![]() The river/stream is a great place to cool off. We'll probably return next year to do a small family reunion, but I'm so glad it won't be our first trip again! Iowa definitely could've made this an easier visit, more likely to result in my recommending it to others.īeautiful and relaxing place to spend a day! Hiking trails are wonderful, well marked and lovely to hike. All in all, I thought this park was lovely, but definitely challenging to a new visitor. All bathrooms were open, if you could figure out which of the limestone buildings they might be in. Half of the water fountains in the park worked. Also, perhaps it's just indicative of the time of year, but the beach was covered in Canadian Geese and their droppings and a water quality warning sign had been posted. Basically, this entire park system needs to be brought up to current state park standards - at least, as I've seen them implemented in other states. If bathroom buildings could have signs in front of them, especially near the unlit roads (at least my headlights would've caught the signs there) that would be a major improvement. If the park entrance signs could include distances, it would help unfamiliar guests quite a bit with knowing how far they must travel into these unlit areas before reaching their destinations. Additionally, this park's signage needs major updating. If somebody from the park could have called me back earlier in the day, to tell me how to proceed before I was out of my cell phone's service area, that would have been great. Eventually we knocked on another rented cabin's door to ask their occupants how they got in their cabins "after hours." I won't post the answer on this public site, but it left something to be desired. We arrived at 8:30pm, in the rain, without any office or official to turn to for help. I was disappointed with the information available on Iowa's official website and how nobody answered the park phone during normal business hours or returned my phone call to tell me how late arrivals are handled. The playground and hiking trail near the cabins were perfect for entertaining our young kids for many hours. We rented a cabin and were very pleasantly surprised by how modern and clean it was. The park grounds are beautiful with the historic limestone buildings, quiet lake and shade forest hiking trails. This was our first visit to Backbone State Park, for a family wedding. ![]()
